The whisky society took part in Movember and are co-hosting a charity ceilidh with the Brewing society to raise money for three chosen charities!
Whisky Society’s Movember and Charity Ceilidh
Movember has been a charity close to the heart of the whisky society for some years now and hence we decided take part in raising money for their campaign to aid; men’s mental health and suicide prevention; prostate cancer, and testicular cancer diagnosis, treatment, and support.
As a society we ran multiple events throughout Movember; we had a talk with one of the managers at the Nc’nean Distillery about their sustainability achievements (in part with Sustainability Week); a talk with the whisky legend Charles McLean MBE; our international blind whisky tasting; a tour at the Holyrood distillery; and our final tasting, the luxury! At our final tasting, the luxury, we were able to put on a raffle thanks to donations from the Dingle Distillery and raised an extra £165 for our Movember campaign!
The whisky society managed to raise a total of £463 for Movember! That placed us among the top 10 clubs and societies across the Sports and Student Unions! (We were the only society to make it to the top 10 ??)!
Following on from the success of our Movember campaign (and our undying desire to have a ceilidh), we teamed up with the Brewing Society to host a charity ceilidh! Together, the two societies have chosen three charities to donate all our proceeds to:
All three charities work with social issues and injustices, from helping to house and feed the homeless, to helping provide therapy to those who in need. With help from the Heriot-Watt Universities Annual Fund we are going to be able to raise a lot of money for these three charities (and in the process, have a lot of fun!)
The ceilidh is open to anyone! If you’re reading this article and have made it this far then we’d love to have you along too! The ceilidh will be on the 26th of February at the Corn Exchange, doors open at 7:30pm and we’ll be dancing until late!
Ticket price is only £17.5, and within that price, £14.75 of each ticket will be going directly to the charities, the other £2.75 are ticket/service fees imposed by Ticketmaster!
If you’re interesting and want to come, then here’s the link to the ceilidh!
If you’re at all interested in whisky or what we do, please don’t hesitate to join us or get in touch via email or Instagram (@hwwhiskysoc). We plan on getting more tastings, more talks, and more distillery tours this semester!
Until then, slainte mhath!
