We feel like it’s only right to spotlight some of the amazing volunteers that help make the Student Union what it is today!
First up is Mo. Mo started off getting involved with the Student Union as a Freshers Rep. His energy and enthusiasm as a Freshers Rep was a massive asset in welcoming students to campus this year. We asked Mo how he would feel about joining the Student Union in a paid part-time capacity as one of the Welcome Team members. Thankfully for us, he said yes!
After a full semester as a volunteer, Welcome Team member and an interim pub quiz host we asked Mo a couple of questions about his time at the Student Union:
When did you join the Student Union as a volunteer?
I joined at the start of the year as a freshers rep. Beforehand, I honestly didn’t know much about the Union or its volunteering opportunities.
Why did you join?
It seemed like a lot of fun! I missed my own freshers week, so I wanted to see what happens during freshers and what events are held. I also wanted to get more involved with the University and the Union.
What did you enjoy most about volunteering?
I had a lot of fun! Getting to meet new people, gaining new experiences. But what I enjoyed most was the environment of the SU. Everyone was extremely friendly and fun to work with, and you could tell that all the staff were passionate in creating a stronger student experience.
What’s one thing you didn’t expect?
I was surprised when I found out that we were able to participate in the Freshers trips, go mini golfing, bowling, etc. It was all a lot of fun.
Would you recommend volunteering?
I definitely would recommend for everyone to give some sort of volunteering a shot! The experience you gain, and the people you meet make it all worthwhile. Not to mention, it looks great on your CV.
What’s your current role at the Student Union?
I am currently part of the ‘Welcome Team’ at the Student Union.
What do you enjoy most about it?
I really enjoy the people I work with! Like I said, everyone is just super passionate and dedicated to further better student life! Also, I enjoy talking to students from all around the world, sharing their life experiences and stories.
Any surprises?
I was honestly surprised by how much the Union has happening at all times. It feels like there's something happening everyday, some sort of event or society meeting. It's an insanely lively environment!
