When did you join the Student Union as a Department Officer?
I joined the role of Department Officer in September 2024.
Why did you decide to become a Department Officer?
I decided to become a Department Officer because I'm passionate about contributing to the community and improving communication between the university and its students. With my strong organisational skills and ability to listen and support others, I believe I can help create a positive, stress-free academic environment where everyone feels heard and valued.
What do you enjoy most about being a Department Officer?
I enjoy most about being a Department Officer is the ability to quickly address and resolve student concerns, which makes a significant positive impact on their experience. Being responsive and maintaining flexibility in communication helps build trust and ensures a collaborative, student-focused approach, making me feel like I'm truly making a difference.
What’s one thing you didn’t expect?
One thing I didn’t expect was how much time the role would require, making it challenging to balance studying, the part-time job I’ve got outside the university, and family commitments. Juggling all these responsibilities was difficult at times, but it helped me develop better time management and prioritisation skills.
Would you recommend becoming a Department Officer?
Yes, I would definitely recommend becoming a Department Officer. It’s a rewarding role that offers the chance to make a real difference, improve communication, and build strong connections within the university community.
Any Surprises?
One surprise was realising how many issues actually arise over the course of a single semester. It was eye-opening to see the variety of concerns students face, and it highlighted the importance of being proactive and responsive to support them effectively.
