It has been great seeing such a wonderful response to the Movember charity events that have been held throughout November to raise money for men’s mental health here at the Student Union, and it’s safe to say this year’s Movember darts competition and Battle of the Bands did not disappoint! The full article is available here.
The Darts Night
November has been jam-packed with wonderful events hosted here at the student union to raise money for the Movember organisation. Both the darts and the battle of the band’s nights were hugely successful events which raised lots of money for an amazing cause. The first event of the two was the long-awaited Heriot-Watt University Movember Darts Competition.
On Friday the 17th of November, Zero’s hosted the biggest darts competition on planet earth. A night full of darting drama, laughs, drinks, and fabulous moustaches, it was certainly the place to be. Fourteen darting duos came, but only one would leave with the crown!
The evening began with the draw, where each of the teams were drawn their first match in a straight knockout format. YOU LOSE, YOU’RE OUT! The crowd was in full voice throughout the evening and after a couple of hours of nail-biting darting drama the final eight teams were decided.
After a tense second round of games, with a few upsets, the final four duos were left to battle it out and after a short raffle break with some amazing prizes up for grabs, the darting action got back underway. After two close semi-final games which took place during the late hours of the evening into the early hours of Saturday morning, just two teams were left standing to battle it out to be crowned the 2023 Heriot-Watt University Movember Darts Champions.
The Darts Final
The final game of the night was a clash between Sam Drummond and partner Scott Anderson who were up against Alistair Sutherland and partner Aaron Gamble. Both teams had put on a show throughout the evening leading up to the final with Student Union President Scott recording the only 180 (maximum) of the night. So, the final could have gone either way as it kicked off at around 1am on Saturday morning.
After a pretty dominant performance throughout the competition, Alaistair Sutherland and partner Aaron Gamble solidified their earlier dominance with a 2-0 win in the final, in a best of 3 format, over this year’s runners up Sam Drummond and Student Union President Scott Anderson. Huge congratulations to Alaistair and Aaron who were deserved winners on the night and were crowned the 2023 Heriot-Watt University Movember Darts Champions!
Massive thanks to everyone who competed in the darting action and to those who came and supported the competitors. It was great to see such an amazing turnout and an even bigger thanks to those who contributed towards raising money for Movember on the night!
The Battle of the Bands Night
And if the darts night wasn’t yet enough for you, just a week later, on Friday the 24th, the annual Battle of the Bands night took place in Zero’s.
It can be confidently said that those who came down for the nights musical entertainment did not leave disappointed. Eight bands entered this years Battle of the Bands competition and battled it out on the stage in a straight knockout format to become this year’s Battle of the Bands winners.
The night began with the initial first round draw which saw each band take to the stage and perform. After each round the crowd were given the chance to vote for their favourites by purchasing tokens and casting their votes.
After the first round, the audiences’ votes were totalled and the four bands that progressed to the semi’s were Sheepish, Oatmeal, North Orbital and Sapiens. The four then played a second song to win over the crowd to try and book their spot in the final and following two close semi-final face-offs it was Oatmeal and North Orbital who would be facing off in the final.
The Battle of the Bands Final
The night was full of great music from every band, and with a wide variety of musical styles on display, there was something to accommodate for everyone’s musical taste. After a quick raffle break full of vouchers, goodies, and Movember merchandise up for grabs, the final two bands took to the stage for the final time. Both bands would have been worthy winners after their excellent performances throughout the night, but it was the ‘Oatmeal’ duo that came out on top and were crowned the Heriot-Watt Movemeber Battle of the Bands Champions for 2023!
It was great to see such an amazing turn-out once again, off the back of the successful darts evening. Thank you to all the bands who bravely stepped on stage and smashed it on the night, thanks to everyone who came along and made such an amazing audience, and a huge congrats to this year’s winners, ‘Oatmeal’!
Yet another wonderful event hosted here at the union, so perhaps the biggest thanks, goes out to all those who organised both events as well as those who helped both nights run smoothly throughout! We all raised a lot of money for the amazing Movember organisation! Thank you everyone!
