Your Officer’s monthly roundup for July:

Cameron Student Union President

Student Housing

July was quieter in terms of meetings, but I had some crucial discussions with University management focused on student housing issues, aiming to align course deadlines with housing contracts so that a small number of students are no longer forced to move out before their final deadline

This month, significant work was done on the Housing Report 2023/24, revealing the extent of the housing crisis and leading to planned lobbying for more student support. Additionally, articles were produced to help students navigate housing challenges, and collaborative efforts were initiated to address housing issues locally and nationally.

Supporting effective and accessible food initiatives

The Community Larder and Meals initiatives were reviewed to tackle better food insecurity and cost of living challenges among students. Changes include implementing a voucher system for food-insecure students, offering discounted daily breakfasts, expanding community meals, and extending food programs to Galashiels and Orkney students. These improvements aim to make food support more effective and accessible.

Changing Heriot-Watt’s investment policy

After years of campaigning from myself, previous officers and students, a major win was achieved, resulting in significant changes to Heriot-Watt's investment policy. The university has now banned investments in fossil fuels, companies violating international law, and those under sanctions, with a commitment to annual transparency. Despite these victories, ongoing efforts will focus on a complete ban on other unethical industries and greater student involvement in investment decisions. It's student money after all, and we deserve a say!

Holly Vice President Academic

July kind of felt like this month went by super-fast…possibly because of I was off on annual leave for half of the month. However, once I was back, I spent some time figuring out how I wanted to achieve my manifesto points for the following year. From this, I worked out what these projects will look like. As they progress and flourish, I am sure details of this will come out!

Relationship building

I focused on building key relationships between various members of staff within the University and having introduction and catch-up meetings.

Training

I attended the first session of SPARQs ‘That’s Quality’ online session, where I learned the importance of enhancing quality within University.

Global Issues

I hosted the first ever VPA Global Issues + Feedback meeting, where I meet with the other VPAs in Dubai and Malaysia.

Freshers planning

The rest of the month was spent planning and organising Fresher’s events for Edinburgh and Galashiels campus as well as working towards our Global Priorities as an officer team!

Sebi Vice President Community

Staff BSL lessons

This Month I arranged for two all staff BSL Lessons from the President of Signing Society, The first lesson was a great success with a number of staff members learned; to sign the alphabet, some basic greetings and common questions. The second lesson will be next week for those staff that couldn’t make the first lesson or for those who want to practice what they have already learned.

Events for Postgrads

I also organised a free ping pong, pool and darts night for the Postgrads on one of our last Postgrad Fridays at Geordies bar, then our final Postgrad Friday is a Pub Quiz Hosted by yours truly, free to play and crazy prizes to be won.

Climate action

I also did some filming for the climate advocacy training modules which are a canvas course we are launching next semester to allow students and staff to become more climate aware and hopefully be more sustainable.

Gala Freshers

We also hired our new Galashiels intern who is incredible, and we are very excited to deliver our Gala freshers week and work on crazy events throughout the year.
